Downtown Elks Parade…what a waste!

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 6:22 pm

Every year for many, many years the local Elks have held a “parade” downtown.
No Parking signs used to go up the day before, chasing folks away for two days in a row. (since nobody bothered to read the small print stating date/time/etc) Now the signs go up the day of the parade, stating no parking from 1-5.
Each year the “parade” gets smaller. This year it only took 10 minutes and 31 seconds for the entire parade to pass.
The “parade” does not attract a crowd of any kind. When more people are in the parade than those watching, it’s a non-event.
It really pisses me off that someone allows such a non-event to jeopardize 9 blocks of parking for four+ hours.
This parade has become too small to warrant such a huge closure of parking spaces for such a long time.
Visitors see tons of no parking signs, don’t read the signs details and leave. For the past 4 years it has been the worst business day downtown. I am asking that the city shorten the parade route or limit such a small activity to a block party. I understand that the parade is all about fellowship, but what sort of fellowship involves hurting all of the businesses downtown!?

Top 10 Marijuana studies the government wishes they never funded.

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 5:45 pm

10) MARIJUANA USE HAS NO EFFECT ON MORTALITY: A massive study of California HMO members funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found marijuana use caused no significant increase in mortality. Tobacco use was associated with increased risk of death. Sidney, S et al. Marijuana Use and Mortality. American Journal of Public Health. Vol. 87 No. 4, April 1997. p. 585-590. Sept. 2002.

9) HEAVY MARIJUANA USE AS A YOUNG ADULT WON’T RUIN YOUR LIFE: Veterans Affairs scientists looked at whether heavy marijuana use as a young adult caused long-term problems later, studying identical twins in which one twin had been a heavy marijuana user for a year or longer but had stopped at least one month before the study, while the second twin had used marijuana no more than five times ever. Marijuana use had no significant impact on physical or mental health care utilization, health-related quality of life, or current socio-demographic characteristics. Eisen SE et al. Does Marijuana Use Have Residual Adverse Effects on Self-Reported Health Measures, Socio-Demographics or Quality of Life? A Monozygotic Co-Twin Control Study in Men. Addiction. Vol. 97 No. 9. p.1083-1086. Sept. 1997

8 ) THE “GATEWAY EFFECT” MAY BE A MIRAGE: Marijuana is often called a “gateway drug” by supporters of prohibition, who point to statistical “associations” indicating that persons who use marijuana are more likely to eventually try hard drugs than those who never use marijuana implying that marijuana use somehow causes hard drug use. But a model developed by RAND Corp. researcher Andrew Morral demonstrates that these associations can be explained “without requiring a gateway effect.” More likely, this federally funded study suggests, some people simply have an underlying propensity to try drugs, and start with what’s most readily available. Morral AR, McCaffrey D and Paddock S. Reassessing the Marijuana Gateway Effect. Addiction. December 2002. p. 1493-1504.

7) PROHIBITION DOESN’T WORK (PART I): The White House had the National Research Council examine the data being gathered about drug use and the effects of U.S. drug policies. NRC concluded, “the nation possesses little information about the effectiveness of current drug policy, especially of drug law enforcement.” And what data exist show “little apparent relationship between severity of sanctions prescribed for drug use and prevalence or frequency of use.” In other words, there is no proof that prohibition the cornerstone of U.S. drug policy for a century reduces drug use. National Research Council. Informing America’s Policy on Illegal Drugs: What We Don’t Know Keeps Hurting Us. National Academy Press, 2001. p. 193.

6) PROHIBITION DOESN’T WORK (PART II: DOES PROHIBITION CAUSE THE “GATEWAY EFFECT”?): U.S. and Dutch researchers, supported in part by NIDA, compared marijuana users in San Francisco, where non-medical use remains illegal, to Amsterdam, where adults may possess and purchase small amounts of marijuana from regulated businesses. Looking at such parameters as frequency and quantity of use and age at onset of use, they found no differences except one: Lifetime use of hard drugs was significantly lower in Amsterdam, with its “tolerant” marijuana policies. For example, lifetime crack cocaine use was 4.5 times higher in San Francisco than Amsterdam. Reinarman, C, Cohen, PDA, and Kaal, HL. The Limited Relevance of Drug Policy: Cannabis in Amsterdam and San Francisco. American Journal of Public Health. Vol. 94, No. 5. May 2004. p. 836-842.

5) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART I): Federal researchers implanted several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung cancers, in mice, then treated them with cannabinoids (unique, active components found in marijuana). THC and other cannabinoids shrank tumors and increased the mice’s lifespans. Munson, AE et al. Antineoplastic Activity of Cannabinoids. Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Sept. 1975. p. 597-602.

4) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER, (PART II): In a 1994 study the government tried to suppress, federal researchers gave mice and rats massive doses of THC, looking for cancers or other signs of toxicity. The rodents given THC lived longer and had fewer cancers, “in a dose-dependent manner” (i.e. the more THC they got, the fewer tumors). NTP Technical Report On The Toxicology And Carcinogenesis Studies Of 1-Trans- Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, CAS No. 1972-08-3, In F344/N Rats And B6C3F(1) Mice, Gavage Studies. See also, “Medical Marijuana: Unpublished Federal Study Found THC-Treated Rats Lived Longer, Had Less Cancer,” AIDS Treatment News no. 263, Jan. 17, 1997.

3) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART III): Researchers at the Kaiser-Permanente HMO, funded by NIDA, followed 65,000 patients for nearly a decade, comparing cancer rates among non-smokers, tobacco smokers, and marijuana smokers. Tobacco smokers had massively higher rates of lung cancer and other cancers. Marijuana smokers who didn’t also use tobacco had no increase in risk of tobacco-related cancers or of cancer risk overall. In fact their rates of lung and most other cancers were slightly lower than non-smokers, though the difference did not reach statistical significance. Sidney, S. et al. Marijuana Use and Cancer Incidence (California, United States). Cancer Causes and Control. Vol. 8. Sept. 1997, p. 722-728.

2) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART IV): Donald Tashkin, a UCLA researcher whose work is funded by NIDA, did a case-control study comparing 1,200 patients with lung, head and neck cancers to a matched group with no cancer. Even the heaviest marijuana smokers had no increased risk of cancer, and had somewhat lower cancer risk than non-smokers (tobacco smokers had a 20-fold increased lung cancer risk). Tashkin D. Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study. American Thoracic Society International Conference. May 23, 2006.

1) MARIJUANA DOES HAVE MEDICAL VALUE: In response to passage of California’s medical marijuana law, the White House had the Institute of Medicine (IOM) review the data on marijuana’s medical benefits and risks. The IOM concluded, “Nausea, appetite loss, pain and anxiety are all afflictions of wasting, and all can be mitigated by marijuana.” While noting potential risks of smoking, the report added, “we acknowledge that there is no clear alternative for people suffering from chronic conditions that might be relieved by smoking marijuana, such as pain or AIDS wasting.” The government’s refusal to acknowledge this finding caused co-author John A. Benson to tell the New York Times that the government “loves to ignore our report they would rather it never happened.” Joy, JE, Watson, SJ, and Benson, JA. Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base. National Academy Press. 1999. p. 159. See also, Harris, G. FDA Dismisses Medical Benefit From Marijuana. New York Times. Apr. 21, 2006

When is enough enough!?

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 2:05 pm

Life in the real world just keeps getting worse and worse. Folks are losing homes, jobs, cars and family members due to a shitty economy and bad politics. Suicide rates are waaaaaay up. (my ex-wife popped herself in June)
You know if you take a frog and drop him in a pot of boiling water, he will jump out immediately, but if you place that same frog in progressively warmer water until it boils, he will stay there until he cooks to death. Our government is doing the same thing to us. They are progressively taking away more and more of our rights until they have absolute control of us. They can already tell where you are just from your cell phone. Simply get on a plane, fly to another time zone and turn on your phone…bingo, the time changes…they know exactly where you are! Use your credit card and they know where you are. Make a phone call and they know where you are. No more privacy.

Look, your house is worthless, gas is $4.00+ a gallon, air travel will soon become unavailable except for the wealthy, pollution is ruining everything, and nobody is angry enough to do anything about it………frog legs anyone!?

I flipped off Dick Cheney

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 1:36 pm

Yesterday Pam & I were in DC celerating our 9th wedding anniversary, when Dick Cheney’s motorcade passed by.
I ran to the sidewalk and stuck my finger waaaaaaaayy out in front of me, and mouthed, “FUCK YOU” several times.
A huge black SUV in the motorcade broke formation and started towards me, but quickly rejoined the motorcade when they realized I was just another angry American.
Fuck you Mr. Cheney!

Frederick Meter Maids are fucking morons!

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 2:20 pm

I found the perfect parking spot downtown, it’s right across the street from my shop, no meter, no “no parking sign”, no painted curb, just a space sitting there, waiting for someone to park. So if there are no posted rules to comply by, why do these assholes keep giving me a parking ticket every 2 hours!? I plan on parking there every fucking day and taking this to court.

June 24, 2008

Fuck the Frederick Parking Department

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 2:47 pm

Frederick considers parking a business and not a service.
Sadly the department is staffed by a bunch of yokels who on the most part are clueless.
A few weeks ago I saw one of our mindless meter maids ticket 4 motorcycles parked in 1 spot.
$45 each. $180 total and 4 people who will never visit Frederick again!
See an expired meter? Drop a quarter in it…keep the city from making a minimum of $10 from a ticket.
Avoid the indoor lots at all costs, you never know how much they will charge you on any given day.
Recently the fees actually charged and signage listing fees were totally different.

No, I will NOT comply! Period!

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 4:41 pm

Americans today are just as helpless as the Jews as they were being carted off to concentration camps to be used as slave labor and eventually murdered.
Bit by bit, piece by piece, the US government is taking away all your rights and freedoms and property. How far are you willing to let them go until you stop them? Did you realize governments around the world control the local news? Even Hitler made up stories for the newspaper. It’s time to make a decision for yourself.

Heavy rains cause ceiling collapse!

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 10:56 pm

I just spent the entire day removing water, plaster and assorted crap from the carpet due to heavy rains and a roof that has more holes in it than swiss cheese!
Just as I was getting to leave, an entire panel of drywall crashed to the ground and fell down the staircase….F#@K
The landlord is sending his son to take a look at things…leaks in 3 or 4 places throughout the shop.
All of the merchandise in 2 of our 3 display windows was soaking wet. I have 3 trashbags FILLED with damaged crap!
Luckily, we are closed on Monday’s so nobody was hurt, and oddly enough, I was there to clean the carpet, so I had a rug doctor already with me!
Will upstairs be open for business???
I don’t know yet, but I’ll be sure to post updates here as soon as I know more.

Turn Off your Fucking Cell-Phone!

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 7:03 am

cell phone guy

I decided to instill a new rule for the new location, no cell phones.

So…right on the front door (and in several more locations inside) I have placed signs that read, “in consideration of others, please turn off your cell phone”.

I can’t believe how many people don’t read signs or who feel that rules don’t pertain to them. I’m also surprised how many folks ask why they have to turn them off. I’m tired of selfish folks who live oblivious of everyone else. Nobody wants to hear your cute little ring-tone or hear your conversation. Turn off your phone and open your eyes…there is plenty of cool shit to enjoy if you would only slow down, shut your mouth, open your eyes and open your mind….

Turn off your fucking cell-phone!!

Mr. Bill

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 11:13 am

No…this isn’t about the Mr. Bill you grew up watching on Saturday Night Live, this is about a dear friend of mine who is dying, Bill MacGowan.

Mr. Bill is a a kind, gentle soul who saved my ass in the early 90’s.

Billy Mac taught me to appreciate night blooming Jasmin and the benefits of an afternoon nap. He also shared in my laughter anytime a Thai friend of ours said “glapefluit”. We would burst out laughing every-time she said, “Ooh, you glow glapeflute at you hows?”

Bill asked a friend to call me, so I’m flying down to Gainesville in the morning to visit him in hospice. I have so much I want to thank him for.

You will be missed Mr. Bill, you will be missed….

WE ARE OPEN!!!!

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 11:14 am

The new location opened today at 3 PM…we actually had a small crowd waiting by the doors. Lots of people stopped by to check the place out. The upper level was a hit with our regulars, while the lower level kept moms busy with the younger ones.
We still have TONS to do, and plenty of kinks to work out, but we are off to a good start.

Thanks to EVERYONE who helped make this possible!
Pam & I couldn’t have done it without you!

How many folks have a “To Do” list that contains things like ordering stock & fixtures for the women only room, “Valley of the Vibrators” and ditto for the “Men’s Room.” I will be buried under a mountain of catalogs!

Time to get some rest…

Fixing up the new location

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 11:15 am

Now that the ink is dry on the lease for the new location, (43 A South Market Street)folks are busy getting the place ready for us. The old carpet is being removed, paint colors have been chosen, the outdoor deck is being replaced, etc…

Downstairs will be family friendly, depending on your definition of family! Upstairs is a whole other story, nothing will be sacred. Lots of individual rooms/galleries full of themed merchandise.

There might even be “toy room”, who knows!?

February 22, 2008

It’s official: WE ARE MOVING!!!

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 11:15 am

Yes-sir-ee Bob, we are moving to our new location later this spring. The new address is 43 A South Market Street, next to Griffs.

The shop will be 3 1/2 times larger than our current digs. 3400 square feet on 2 levels. The entire lower level will be family friendly (well, it depends on your family…) Upstairs will push the limits :)

Pam and I are extremely excited & scared to death at the same time. We have lots of surprises in store…..stay tuned for more info!

In anticipation of expanding, Pam & I are heading off to the Big Apple for 3 days to attend the New York Gift Show. Aisle after aisle of interesting crap to look at. You have no idea how many miles we will walk to keep you lauging… Listening to your laughter as we soak our feet makes it all worthwhile.

The plan to expand continues…they are drawing up a lease for our review/approval. I still haven’t told my current landlord, but I’m sure he has a pretty good idea, unless he’s a total idiot.

Is a Moving Sale Down the Road???

Filed under: Eric's Rant — CineGraphic Studios at 2:19 pm

We have decided that in order for us to grow, we need a bigger store…
Several spaces are currently available downtown, but asking prices vary from expensive to ridiculous. Pam & I have settled on one location…close to Carroll Creek, and nearly 3 1/2 times larger than our current space.

We are still negotiating, but once the ink is dry we will let everyone know exactly what to expect. This MAY mean the photo-booth returns, still not sure though….

It will be nice to get out of our current space, the landlord refuses to repair the central air/heat, leaving us to cool the entire shop with a window air conditioning unit meant to cool one small room. The tiny heater he supplied with the shop is right across from the cash register, yet my toes are frozen…Man…I hate slum lords more than I hate politicians!

Soooooo…..let’s keep the girls busy packing boxes…

You can even place an order and we’ll have it ready for you to pick-up at the shop.

Pam and I appreciate our customers more than you can imagine…
Thanks for letting us make you laugh, groan and cry….

If you’ve read this much, you MIGHT want to know that we are planning to move into a much larger space, away from Starbucks, and closer to the creek…
